Description:
The earliest section of the monastery is referred to as the Academy, built in 1887 it is a two story Romanesque revival structure with arched windows and two courtyards. In 1915 a major expansion was undertaken, completed in 1924. The Chapel mimics the Academy’s Romanesque style with varying roof heights, arched windows, towers and turrets. The striking dome rises 87 feet above the sanctuary and can be seen from miles away. Tranquil walkways wind throughout the monastery along with a grotto, various statues and areas of retreat for prayer and meditation.

The Monastery has been a part of Southern Indiana’s history for over a hundred years, an icon of the strong Catholic heritage within the region. The Monastery of Immaculate Conception draws people from all over the country to appreciate its serene beauty, aiding in Ferdinand’s tourism industry and economy.
